04 · What’s Included
Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies We Treat
Learn about the urgent dental concerns we treat, how we approach emergencies, and what you can expect during your child’s visit.
Knocked-Out Teeth
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown and place it back into the socket if possible. If you cannot reinsert it, keep the tooth moist in milk and contact our office immediately. Never reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth, as this can damage the developing permanent tooth.
Displaced Teeth
If a tooth becomes loose or moves out of position after an injury, contact our office as soon as possible. Avoid manipulating the tooth and have your child bite gently on clean gauze if needed. Depending on the injury, the tooth may need to be repositioned and stabilized.
Broken or Chipped Teeth
Rinse your child’s mouth with water and save any pieces of the tooth you can find. A cold compress can help with swelling. Contact our office so we can evaluate the injury and determine whether the tooth needs treatment.
Severe Toothaches
Gently brush and floss around the area to remove any trapped food or debris. If the pain continues, contact our office for an evaluation. A cold compress and an age-appropriate over-the-counter pain reliever can help with discomfort until your child can be seen.
Dental Abscesses & Facial Swelling
Dental infections can cause pain, swelling, or a bump on the gums and should be evaluated promptly. Contact our office if your child develops signs of a dental infection. If your child has rapidly increasing facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling involving the eye, or appears seriously ill, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Soft Tissue Injuries
For cuts or injuries to the lips, tongue, or gums, apply firm pressure with clean gauze to control bleeding. A cold compress can help with swelling. If bleeding is heavy or cannot be controlled with pressure, seek emergency medical care.
Lost Filling or Crown
Contact our office if your child loses a filling or crown so we can determine when the tooth should be evaluated. Avoid chewing on the affected tooth until it can be seen.
